A research group from the University of Chicago recently studied mice with an independent variable being a high-fat diet. Two groups of mice were studied, germ-free mice which did not gain additional weight from the high-fat diet and specific pathogen-free or SPF mice which had bacterium from the families Clostridiaceae and Peptostrepococcaceae that favored high-fat foods. The results were the SPF mice gained weight. The results of the study concluded that potentially using prebiotics or probiotics can aid in managing diseases like malnourishment and obesity.
